Bonefit
Bonefit is a certification program through Osteoporosis Canada to help educate, empower and support individuals and communities in the risk reduction and treatment of osteoporosis.
Bonefit ensures an evidence-informed approach to exercise training for healthcare professionals to assist in the safe instruction of exercise and the most up to date education for individuals who have bone density changes.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases, or when the quality or structure of the bone changes. This can lead to a decrease in bone strength that can increase the risk of fractures (broken bones). Osteopenia is the same as osteoporosis but with a lesser severity.
The goal of a bonefit program is to reduce your risk of fractures, morbidity, mortality, and costs from osteoporosis through an integrated and comprehensive approach aimed at health promotion and disease management.
At Mariposa Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation we combine our university level training as Physiotherapists with the evidence informed guidance of the Bonefit program to assist our patients in either one on one sessions or in a group setting, providing you education, activity modification strategies and a individualized exercise program that you can safely implement into your home setting.
Fact:
The risk of Osteoporosis doubles every five years between the ages of 40-60 years but the best prevention starts in childhood!
Prevention:
Good healthy diet (ideally starting in childhood) including adequate vitamin D and Calcium intake.
Regular exercise including resistance training (if you have bone density changes already you should seek advice from a trained health professional before commencing a new program).
Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
